Brutal arrests in Austria and Empatia’s response1 2 3 4 > After the protests in Austria, Germany and Sweden, on 4 June 2008 Empatia together with Viva! Foundation took part in a demonstration in front of the Austrian Embassy against the brutal arrests of animal activists in Austria. The aggressive police intervention had taken place on 21 May 2008.
Account of the protest in front of Austrian Embassy in Warsaw
Approximately 15 people protested in front of the Embassy of Austria in Warsaw regarding the events in Austria, namely brutal proceeding against pro-animal activists.
Carefully watched by a quite large group of policemen, we read through a speaking tube dr Martin Balluch’s letter written in prison where he went on hunger strike. We talked about the situation of the detained activists in Austria and their activity. We had whistles with us and we hooted our disagreement with violation of human rights and treating activists, who cut themselves off from using violence, like dangerous terrorists. We signed two letters, one of which will be sent right to the detainees. Unfortunately, there were no media representatives at the demonstration. The Embassy’s employees displayed the same kind of indifference.

We stood right at the entrance to the Embassy, our banner read: “Stop government terror!”

The Embassy’s building is located in a rather busy street next to a bus stop. We were then noticeable to the Warsaw people, some of whom came up to us to ask about the details of the protest
